The SF Tango Music Academy (SFTMA) is a seven-day intensive program nestled in the SF Bay Area, offering a unique opportunity to study under renowned professors from the prestigious tango orchestra school, "La Orquesta Escuela de Tango, Emiliio Balcarce" in Buenos Aires.

Location: The Dome, Oakland, California

Daily Schedule

10:00 AM – 5:00 PM – Classes
5:00 – 7:00 PM – Optional private lessons, participant-led small ensemble rehearsals, individual practice and dinner
7:30 – 9:30 PM (Wed–Fri) – Evening concerts
8:00 – 11:00 PM (Saturday) – Final concert

Program Highlights

  • Intensive, performance-centered conservatory-level training for advanced musicians in a focused academic environment

  • Individualized instruction and close mentorship with the faculty artists

  • Small-cohort format ensuring hands-on guidance and personalized attention

  • Orchestral and chamber ensemble rehearsal and sectional coaching

  • Detailed study of traditional and contemporary tango repertoire, including new tango pieces composed by artist faculty

  • Instrument-focused tango music history seminar

  • Emphasis on stylistic authenticity, ensemble cohesion, and performance practice

  • Collaborating and meeting peers in the cohort

  • Multiple public performance opportunities (orchestra concerts, small ensemble concerts, and a final gala concert)

Wednesday, February 25, 7:30 PM – Artistmigration Concert Series, SF Downtown
Thursday, February 26, 7:30 PM – Participants' solo and small ensemble concert at the Dome, Oakland
Friday, February 27, 7:30 PM – Faculty concert, Oakland
Saturday, February 28, 8:00 PM – Mega orchestra concert for the dance community, Oakland

Tuition

Early Registration: $950 (by February 1, 2025)
Regular Registration: $1,000 (by February 15, 2025)

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for participants in need. For out-of-town participants, housing assistance can be included as part of the scholarship. To apply for a scholarship, please contact us with your registration.

Public Auditing

*Public Auditing Available for a nominal fee: Highly recommended for tango dancers—instrument-focused tango music history taught by our bandoneon and violin professors. $40/ Seminar / Classes

SFTMA provides comprehensive instruction in both traditional and contemporary tango, tailored for Professional, Advanced, and Intermediate musicians. Participants engage in orchestra, small ensembles, and solo sessions, enriched by lectures, concerts, and public performances.
